The Netherlands is a strategically important jurisdiction disproportionate to its size, owing to its role as a European business hub and its position within the Benelux trademark and design system. National-level trademark and design protection is not obtained through a Dutch-only office — instead, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg share the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP), so a Benelux registration covers all three countries at once.

This Benelux structure is the single most important point for foreign counsel: there is no separate "Netherlands-only" trademark registration. Protection routes are a Benelux registration via BOIP, an EU registration via EUIPO, or a Madrid designation of the Benelux or the EU. For clients targeting the Dutch market specifically, a Benelux mark is the national-equivalent route.
